People in a support group

The Young Adult Program at Los Angeles Outpatient Center (LAOP) is designed to meet the specific needs of individuals aged 18 to 24 who are facing mental health challenges during a critical period of life.

At LAOP, we have extensive experience supporting college students and young adults dealing with academic stress, life transitions, and early signs of mental health issues.

Our treatment environment provides a space where young adults feel understood, supported, and empowered to begin their healing journey.

What Is a Young Adult Program?

The mental health treatment program for young adults is part of our broader treatment offerings, tailored for those navigating early adulthood. This stage of life is marked by overwhelming expectations, identity development, and the pressure to succeed academically or transition into the workforce. At LAOP, we help young adults build resilience, improve emotional regulation, and develop strategies to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and other common challenges.

The young adult program includes structured therapeutic care through options like Partial Hospitalization (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), customized to meet the needs of college-age clients. We offer both daytime and planned evening options to ensure accessibility for students and working young adults.

Program Schedule

The Young Adult Program is integrated into our PHP and IOP structures, flexible start times of 9am to 4pm or evening sessions from 5pm-8pm or 6pm to 9pm based on each client’s availability and level of care needed.

An example of a typical schedule for PHP is written below:

Monday to Friday Schedule

  • 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM (Morning Group Therapy Check-In):Young adults start the day by sharing goals and emotions in a supportive group, helping them build self-awareness and a sense of belonging.
  • 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM (Individual Therapy or Specialized Group Sessions): One-on-one or focused group sessions provide a safe space to address academic pressure, identity development, and mental health struggles common in early adulthood.
  • 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM (Lunch and Peer Social Time): This midday break encourages social connection, helping young adults develop interpersonal skills and a healthy routine.
  • 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM (Experiential or Holistic Therapies): Activities like art, movement, or mindfulness give young adults alternative tools to manage emotions and express themselves without judgment.
  • 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM (Life Skills and Stress Management Groups): Practical sessions teach young adults how to navigate college, relationships, and early independence with resilience and confidence.
  • 4:00 PM (End-of-Day Reflection and Check-Out): This wrap-up promotes emotional regulation and helps young clients internalize the coping strategies they’ve practiced throughout the day.

Additional Support

  • Psychiatric Care: Young adults often experience the first onset of conditions like anxiety, depression, or mood disorders between ages 18 and 24. Regular psychiatric evaluations and medication management throughout the week ensure early symptoms are properly addressed, helping to stabilize mood, reduce distress, and support long-term mental wellness during a critical stage of brain development.
  • Family Sessions: For many young adults, family dynamics and communication patterns play a central role in emotional health. Scheduled family sessions provide an opportunity to involve parents or guardians in the recovery process—promoting understanding, improving boundaries, and fostering a support system as young clients navigate independence.
  • Evening Programming: Designed with flexibility in mind, evening sessions accommodate college students, interns, or young professionals who have daytime responsibilities. This allows them to receive comprehensive care without disrupting academic, work, or transitional life goals, making it easier to prioritize mental health while staying on track with their personal ambitions.
